Wow, that is amazing! There must be some amazing leadership as well as dedicated parents and teachers. What is Accelerated Reader? Is that the name of the program? When I googled it, the results said it was a software program for monitoring the practice of elementary reading. It was created by Renaissance Learning. Is it the same program you mentioned?
I am now very curious to know how much control our curriculum director has and what her role is.
I should also mention that my daughter's teacher just started taking a class and asked that Ana be her "project" (she will be taped). She will get one on one time with her teacher with an ERE program. She just started doing this before school. I am hoping this will benefit her too.
Here is a more personal question I have (background: I have 3 children). How do you and your wife balance growing your children spiritually, emotionally, socially and intellecutally?

That is so interesting. We live in a struggling urban neighborhood. With a school that has the 4th highest population of children in poverty in our city and every factor that says that they should be a failing school and yet our school is the top in the area in reading. They are in the 94th percentile or something like that on state tests. They strive to have every first grader read at a 3rd grade level by the time they leave first grade. And it works well. The thing they do is that they have one method of teaching reading school wide. They use accelerated reader (which is individualized) and have someone come in and read with each student daily. When my daughter started there they said she was behind in reading but she left first grade at the 3rd grade level...And I have seen them do this with all kinds of students...the thing in this school is that the teachers do not really have full control of how reading is taught, the curriculum director had developed how it will be done school-district wide.

We do have school choice but it's limited.
I've learned what is more important is how and what method a teacher uses. Two teachers next door to each other can teach much different and have different programs.
There are so many factors whe looked at when we picked our current school- we REALLY researched the schools in our area and moved to attend the one we wanted. Teachers using unsuccessful teaching programs are not as easy to spot and I never thought she would struggle since I followed the steps that are suppose to make strong readers (something I did research). I am more frustrated that her teacher kept telling me not to worry when now I realize that early intervention is important. Figuring out why she is struggling is important too. Her teacher is a kind and caring person but she is a newbie.

Do they have school choice is Wisconsin? Here we would just walk with our money. (schools get about 6000 per kid)...Take heart though, I have a niece who struggled through the first three years (she could not read at all in second grade (and three schools) But know as a college Freshman reads everything! And well! She is brilliant.

We live in Wisconsin.
Ironically, I am a former HS teacher and my husband is a high school counselo(former elementary music teacher).
It is a gut thing- I should have listened to my gut when my daughter's teacher said not to worry whenever I expressed concern. I should have started researching right away to know what kind of questions to even ask. Now I am educating myself & trying to figure out what my next steps should be. She is a 1st grader so intervention is still relatively early.
Thanks for your thoughts and encourement.

What state do you live in? One thing we have learned being an education family here is Michigan is that you, the parent have the power! Make them do something for your daughter, complain constantly and if they do nothing find a school that will!

This is stuff my mother wishes she had done when I was a child...but now that I am married to a school counselor, it is one thing we surely will do.
